Tested out my new Canon 300mm f4.0 L today down at Fairhaven Lake and the surrounding sands. Lighting conditions weren't ideal but using a monopod/tilt head combination I was able to get good results at ISO 200 on static targets.

I got extremely close to a Cormorant -  I had to remove my 1.4x teleconverter, and got some in-flight shots of Redshanks, small wading birds that I hope to get closer to in the next few days and weeks.

Cormorant at 300mm, 1/100sec, f/5.6, ISO 200.

Cormorant at 300mm with 1.4x converter, 1/200sec, f/5.6, ISO 400.

Redshank flock at 300mm with 1.4x converter, 1/1000sec, f/5.6, ISO 400.

Just received my new lens purchased on eBay, Canon 300mm f/4.0. Took it out to Fairhaven Lake to check all is in working order. The verdict, best £500 I ever spent!

4 Cormorant shots taken in quick succession as it leaves the water (heavily cropped) 1/800sec, f/5.6, ISO 200.

Common duck (uncropped). Incredibly sharp focus on this lens. 1/320sec, f/5.6, ISO 200.
